Big Bucks for “Big Bang Theory” Repeats

Talk about an ever-expanding universe: "The Big Bang Theory" will be on your TV a lot more now that it's inked a syndication deal that's, well, more "bang" for the bucks.
Cable giants TBS and Fox both snagged rights to repeats on their networks, and they didn't come cheap. In fact, Variety is reporting that at $1.5 million an episode, the multi-camera sitcom "set a record price." By the way, that blows away the record set by FX of $800,000 for the syndication rights to "Two and a Half Men."
But "Big Bang" fans are surely not surprised. As the New York Times points out, the show is the highest-rated comedy on TV for adults aged 18-49. And it is a hit in Yahoo! Search: Lookups on "the big bang theory" shot up 2,500% in the last week alone. Searches were also big on "big bang theory cast list," "big bang theory tv episodes," and even "big bang theory theme lyrics." To view a clip from the show, go here.
Although the comedy was created by hit-maker Chuck Lorre ("Two and a Half Men") and is now in its third season, the subject matter doesn't seem like something that would be a slam-dunk success: Two physics prodigies (Jim Parsons and Johnny Galecki) in their 20s move next door to a cute blonde (Kaley Cuoco) with show-biz aspirations and no science skills. Let the laughs begin. Really?
But the formula has been a huge hit with critics and viewers alike. One fan recently weighed in on the Yahoo! TV blog: "I love this show. It's my favorite comedy on TV." Another agreed, adding, "I will be buying the first episodes on DVD."
Fans will be happy to hear that the universe has listened — and that they will also be able to catch reruns on cable. Repeats will begin airing in the fall of 2011
